Guinea Pig

Cavia porcellus
Domesticated in the Andes thousands of years ago. No longer found in the wild in this form.
Of everything on this page, guinea pigs come closest to the pet-shop promise: they rarely bite, they tolerate handling well, and children can genuinely enjoy them under supervision. Two things are non-negotiable. They must be kept with their own kind — a solitary guinea pig is a distressed one — and they cannot make their own vitamin C, so the diet is not optional. Get those right and they are lovely, chatty, undemanding animals.

Guinea pig breeds are coat types rather than sizes, so the practical difference between them is how much grooming you are signing up for.
Right for you if
  • You will keep two or more, always.
  • You want a small pet that genuinely tolerates gentle handling.
  • You can provide fresh vegetables daily, not as a treat.
  • You want something quieter and simpler than a rabbit.
Wrong for you if
  • You want a single pet.
  • Daily fresh food is more than you will keep up.
  • You want an animal that lives happily in a small cage — the sold sizes are too small.
  • You want a long-coated breed but not the daily grooming that comes with it.
